Two women are trapped by a past that won't let go. At first sight, Monika and Maj-Britt are as different as two people can be. They have nothing in common but the determination to obliterate their memories. But then a tragic car accident briefly brings them face to face and forces them to confront the emotional voids and secret sadnesses they have been trying to bury. A suspenseful, psychological thriller, Shame reveals the ordinary days of the odd and lonely as they twist into self-destruction—and holds out a glimmering hope of redemption and acceptance.

I've read several novels by this author, who writes standalone novels. She is an excellent writer wnd I've enjoyed her books. This is not a crime thriller, really. It's a psychological novel about two women, each having something in their past they're ashamed of, and how that affects them. Monika is a doctor who's just met the man of her dreams, while Maj-Brit is morbidly obese and never leaves her apartment.

As the novel progresses we see their two lives overlapping occasionally, which can be annoying but here is done well. We know that eventually the two will meet, and when they do it is quite interesting. Crime plays a role in the stories, but it is not the focus.

If you want to read a mystery, this is not the book for you. If you are interested in nuanced character studies and complex portraits with lovely writing, set in Scandinavia, you are in luck!

Books by this author are: Shame (also published as Sacrifice), Betrayal, Missing and Shadow.

Good book. However I read the book sacrifice and that is exactly the same book as Shame!
very well written. look forward to more books from this author!
Excruciating slow-building psychological novel delving deep into the psyche of two female characters apparently overburdened by the strict religious ethos and disciplines of Lutherans in those parts. Beautifully rendered, and literary, without any of the contrivances of the Scandanavian policers so popular now. Yes, three died, but all in the backstory. Heart-rending in parts, as re the death of a small child.
I find this author tiresome at best. Her characters are not like able people. Equally annoying ... The kindle version is all in italics and I kept waiting for a regular typeface throughout the whole book. The plot is predictable and I have no idea why this book is considered a mystery or a thriller. It is neither.
This is such an interesting book. I've never read anything like it and I'm recommending it to all my friends.
I've been reading novels by Scandinavian authors for the last year but they have been crime dramas/murder mysteries. I was told by one of 's sellers that this book is more of a psychological thriller. It is very much a character study, and excellently written. I plan to purchase/read more of Karin Alvtegen's novels (which are not carried in my local library).
I loved Karin Alvtegen's "Missing", and thought highly of her second novel, "Betrayal". "Shame" continues the similar psychological exploration of characters placed in extreme situations. While the first two novels were compulsive reading, "Shame" just becomes tiresome in its unrelenting focus of masochistic self destructive behavior from its two main characters. And that's a shame because the writing (as well as its translation) itself is so clear and direct. This reader needed to feel sympathy for the plight and pain of the two main characters to stay interested in their stories, but the author refused to allow any sort of joy or true happiness for the two women. Only at the very end was there some sort of redemption, but it was so late and rather brief for any cathartic payoff.
